Shiba Inu lead developer queries Coinbase’s ‘Onchain Summer’ campaign
Shiba Inu lead developer Shytoshi Kusama has responded to Coinbase’s Onchain Summer campaign. Kusama suggested that the crypto exchange’s campaign appeared to have similarities with the ideas initially presented by the Shiba Inu community.
Kusama responded to Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong’s update with the statement, “If it isn’t a shadowcat, it’s a copycat.“ On Aug. 3, Armstrong mentioned the launch of the Base mainnet in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and highlighted Coinbase’s upcoming Onchain Summer initiative.
Coinbase is preparing to launch its Ethereum layer-2 solution, known as Base, on Aug. 9. Armstrong recently confirmed that Base aims to bring the next billion users into the blockchain ecosystem by offering tools for developing various Web3 products.

In anticipation of the launch of Base, the Coinbase team organized a campaign called Onchain Summer. The initiative, set to kick off on Aug. 9, has received varied responses from the Shiba Inu community.
In its announcement, Coinbase said the celebratory event is planned to coincide with the mainnet launch of Base, and that the event would span several weeks and encompass a vibrant “festival of art, music, and gaming.“
On July 15, the lead developer of Shiba Inu initiated the “Summer of Shibarium” campaign as a preparation phase leading up to the mainnet launch of its layer-2 scaling solution.

Kusama hinted that Coinbase’s Onchain Summer initiative appeared to draw inspiration from Shiba Inu. However, the respective activities of both events differ significantly.
The Summer of Shibarium is currently underway, and as previously announced by the team, numerous releases have been introduced as part of the preparations for the Shibarium mainnet launch. Among the most recent developments are the Shibarium Beta Bridge and the Shibarium YouTube launch.
